Set Restore shares to groups correctly before scanning the source.
2 min readUpdated
Quick answer
Off restores users, including members found through shared groups. On preserves group shares for mapping to destination groups. Direct user shares are included in both modes.
Your next step
Choose the mode in Scan options before the source scan, then review the resulting recipients during batch preparation.

Setting

Review afterward
Off
You want to restore access to individual users, including users represented by supported shared groups.
Check the resulting user mappings. A change in future group membership will not automatically update these individual grants.
On
You want the destination group itself to receive the share.
Map each source group to the intended existing destination group and verify its membership.
Set it before the source scan
Open Projects, select the project, and expand Scan options.
Set Restore shares to groups to the intended mode.
Run the source scan with that choice, then prepare or rebuild the affected batch.
Inspect the person or group shown on each proposed access change before approval.
What still needs review
Direct user shares remain in scope in either mode.
ShareRestore does not create destination groups or copy group membership.
A group name can be duplicated or have no email address. Use the verified destination object and source key to distinguish it.
If a group or its members cannot be resolved safely, use the review reason to decide whether to correct the mapping or exclude it.
Standard Owners, Members, and Visitors access may be baseline access rather than an individual share to recreate on every item.
